Some clinical conditions and associated absorptive dysfunction can negatively impact fatty acid metabolism. Many patients have compromised health and/or gut ecosystems due to insufficient bile or pancreatic lipase deficiencies. In certain situations, malabsorption of fatty acids can be resolved with the use of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs have significantly higher absorption rates even in the absence of normal bile or lipase secretion. Due to the metabolic advantages offered by MCTs, their use with those patients requiring weight gain, catch-up growth, and other clinical scenarios can be critical.
This webinar will discuss the absorption differences between MCTS and other fat sources and review up-to-date research on when MCTs may be helpful in clinical practice with a focus on the role of MCT in a variety of GI conditions and conditions treated with a ketogenic diet such as traumatic brain injuries and epilepsy. In addition, the speakers will review both coconut oil and supplemental sources of MCTs being used in clinical practice along with practical tips, case studies, and ways to incorporate MCTs into the diet via food and drink. Join Lauren Kronisch MS, RD, LD & Laura Dority MS, RD, LD to review the ins and outs of MCTs and get your questions answered on how MCTs may best play a role in your clinical practice.
